HOW IS UZBEKISTAN ORGANISED TO GET ENGAGED IN IPBES

The Republic of Uzbekistan has joined the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) as the 136th member state. The State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Projects (SCEEP) was designated as the executive body to the IPBES. It gives country directly work with IPBES community and take part in IPBES assessment reports, capacity building programs and workshops.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Currently, there is no national platform to support IPBES at the national level. However, the NFP with Biodiversity Department experts work closely with other stakeholders and assist in IPBES assessments reports. We hope that we will open IPBES Uzbekistan platform in the near future. Nowadays we analyze how to do it more effectively and easily.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE IPBES WORK PROGRAMME

SCEEP as an executive body to IPBES participate in reviewing process of IPBES assessment report and invite other stakeholder to take part in it. Moreover, government agencies experts attend in IPBES online consultation workshops, seminars etc.

Nowadays SCEEP work on promoting IPBES podcast: Nature insight by creating short episodes for easier integration (max 5 minutes) in Uzbek language based on information in IPBES podcasts series.

Last month Uzbekistan compiled in the WDPA is used for reporting to the Convention on Biological Diversity on progress towards reaching the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (particularly Target 11). This progress was estimated as a progress towards Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) core indicators by John Tayleur, Head of the Conserving Lands and Seascape Programme at UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC).

TYPE OF ENGAGEMENT WITH STAKEHOLDERS

In order to increase the engagement of relevant governmental agencies, academic institutions, and NGOs, SCEEP actively shares IPBES assessment reports, summaries for policy-makers, and up-to-date scientific results on the official website and social networks.
